Beyond Rare: Argyle Pink Diamonds

May 1, 2009

Hello Berkshire Weekenders,

Throughout the weekend so far, some of the biggest buzz that I have heard has surrounded the extremely rare pink, Argyle diamonds. These diamonds are on display at Borsheims over the weekend and several pieces featuring these rare stones are available for sale.

I did a little research and wanted to share some quick facts about these amazing stones.

  • These pink diamonds come from the Argyle Diamond Mine in western Australia’s vast Kimberley region. This mine accounts for roughly 90 percent of the world’s supply of pink diamonds.
  • Pink diamonds account for about 1 out of every 1,000,000 carats of diamond found.

Argyle Pink Diamonds Just Stones

  • At the Argyle mine, pink diamonds account for just one tenth of one percent of their annual diamond production.
  • The Argyle mine is estimated to have only about 10 more years of production.
  • The collection of pink tender stones on display at Borsheims is so rare that it is almost never shown directly to the public.
  • Pink diamonds are so valuable that they are often referred to as portable wealth. They are admired as the most concentrated form of wealth on Earth.
