Borsheims’s Flowers

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Hello Berkshire Weekenders,Entrance Flowers
As you are wandering around the Berkshire Shareholder’s Cocktail Reception, I’m sure that you have noticed the wonderful floral arrangements. For the past six years, Voila! has filled the Borsheims showroom with amazing floral displays during Berkshire Hathaway Weekend. This year will be no exception. The theme for this year’s Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder’s Meeting is Saturday In The Park so the flowers will be bright and springy!

Flowers, close upI had the chance to speak with Ann, Voila’s Owner, and she shared a bit of her inspiration and planning with me. She told me that this year will be a bit different than usual. It will be elegant with a twist, incorporating bright oranges, lime greens and hot pinks. We can expect what you might find in a park, including tulips, roses, daisies, and Bells of Ireland. This year Voila will be creating 23 arrangements for the event, including three huge arrangements organized in 23-inch Small Flower Display: Orange and Redcylinder vases wrapped in pussy willows. These large displays will also feature small gems and hand-crafted paper flowers.

“You should just walk in, look up and smile,” according to Ann, these displays should just put a smile on your face. Just like a nice afternoon in the park. Enjoy!

New Micro-Gem Art Welcomes Berkshire Weekenders

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

Hello Weekenders,

Here at Borsheims, we always offer our clients the most gorgeous jewelry. Our entrance is no exception, but the art in our atrium offers a different view of amazing gems that we sell. Borsheims AtriumOur glass atrium always showcases a micro-gem picture by John Koivula. In honor of the Berkshire Hathaway Shareholder’s Weekend this year, we recently added a new print. This one (pictured left) is actually a Brazilian Topaz magnified 40x.

The photo shows epigenetic mineralization in a cleavage plane of the topaz. It was photographed in polarized light. This special photo was taken by world-renowned photographer John Koivula. John has received numerous international awards including Nikon’s Small World Competition” and Kodak’s “Professional Photographer’s Showcase.” MicroWorldofGems offers a great biography of the photographer. The following short description was taken from their site.
Born in 1949 in Spokane, Washington, USA, John Ilmarii Koivula has been studying and photographing the microworld of gemstones since 1961. As an extension of his inclusion research and microscopy he has developed several useful illumination techniques applicable to gemology. He introduced fiber optic illumination to gemology and discovered many of the micro-characteristics now routinely used in the separation of treated stones from natural gems, such as internal diffusion in proving treatment, chromophore cannibalization and the usefulness of intact carbon dioxide and other fluid inclusions in proving natural color.
When you are in town for the Berkshire Hathaway Weekend, make sure to stop by Borsheims and check out this incredible photograph along with all the rest of our beautiful jewelry.

See you soon,

Blindfolded Chess Champion and Magician

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Hello Weekenders,

Thanks for coming out to our Berkshire weekend festivities at Borsheims. I wanted to take this post and highlight a few of the fun festivities that I didn’t get a chance to cover over the weekend.

During the hustle and bustle of the weekend, I didn’t get to write about two really cool shows available at the Borsheims shopping day on Sunday.

First, the magician Norman Beck came back this year to entertain the crowd with his famous card tricks and close-up magic.

Second, this year we were lucky enough to have two-time U.S. chess champion Patrick Wolff. he was just amazing. He played six chess games at once, completely blindfolded. Oh, and he won every game.
