Are Berkshire Hathaway Shareholders Hungry?

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

That’s like asking if the sky is blue. Judging by the food we go through at Borsheims during the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders weekend, I’m going with a resounding ‘yes’. And now I’m hungry, too.

That’s because I’ve been updating our page on Where to Eat in Omaha. Spending an hour looking at all the delicious restaurants we have in Omaha has me in the mood for some serious eating. The page needed updating because of a fabulous new development in town, Midtown Crossing. It’s added 7 restaurants in a 4-block area within the past year. And they’re good.

Our established restaurants are great, too! As I was entering the websites of the restaurants, I knew exactly what I would order right now from each of them. Asiago and artichoke dip = Upstream. Mac and cheese = Marks. Twisted Cork Burger = Twisted Cork. Hotel Cali roll = Blue. Chicken Enchilada = Jams. Think I eat out too much?

We divided up the page into steakhouses (of course), Old Market area, and then the rest of the city. That’s usually what out-of-towners want to know. Local shareholders should find the page useful, too… since it has websites, cuisines, and phone numbers of many of the great restaurants in town.

And now I’m headed to raid the kitchen and try to satisfy this hunger! What are you looking forward to eating this year?

Borsheims without the Berkshire Hathaway shareholders

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011
You out of town shareholders may not realize this, but Borsheims is a large jewelry store with plenty of space to roam and shop during the other 362 days of the year! (We love having each of you here, but know that 40,000 shareholders in the store during one weekend can get a little tight!)

So… how about seeing what we look like on a non-Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder weekend kind of day?

We actually have a parking lot in front of the store... not just a large party tent.

Inside the store, without thousands of shareholders, you can almost see from one entrance to the other.

In Regency Court, there's room for sitting and listening to the piano when it's not packed with shareholders, bridge tables and bars.

More about the Berkshire Theme

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

So I think I let you in on a little secret that there’s a theme for each year’s Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders’ meeting. (This year’s is Planes, Trains and Automobiles… and we’re not talking about the John Candy movie!)

Each year we also pick a color scheme to go with the theme. So what color scheme fits Planes, Trains and Automobiles? Beats me. But we do love the Pantone Color of the Year, honeysuckle.

Pantone calls it a “captivating, stimulating color, that gets the adrenaline going.”

We’ll take it!

You’ll see the color scheme carried out throughout Borsheims and occasionally mimicked at other Berkshire Hathaway events throughout the weekend as well. Here’s a quick look at some of the color already up inside Borsheims:

Construction Complete

Monday, April 18th, 2011

Man that was fast! It seems like it was just last week when I was talking about some construction happening at Borsheims. Want to see the finished product?

You can see we’re still hard at work putting the merchandise into the cases, but we are thrilled to have these new featured areas for our customers and shareholders. A few notes for those regulars who know the current store’s layout: the pearls have moved to where the Judith Leiber bags were located. The Judith Leiber bags have relocated inside the luxury salon. I’m sure you’ll still be able to find just what you’re looking for… and more!

Berkshire Hathaway Weekend Author Reception Moved

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

After the overly-packed author reception last year at one of Omaha’s (and Berkshire Hathaway’s) finest Dairy Queens, the author reception is moving to a new location this year.

The reception features a number of authors who have written books about Warren Buffett and Berkshire Hathaway. You can purchase books, talk with the authors and get your purchases signed. It’s another fun event during the action-packed Berkshire Hathaway shareholders’ weekend.

A Dilly Bar from Berkshire Hathaway's Dairy Queen = delicious!

The new location is at the University of Nebraska Omaha (UNO) in their new College of Business Administration building, Mammel Hall. It’s located at 6708 Pine Street, just south of 67th and Pacific. The author reception will run from 6 to 8pm on Friday, April 29.

Reservations are not required, but bring your annual meeting credentials for a complimentary ice cream. Who doesn’t love ice cream – especially when it’s of the dilly bar variety!

Have your Berkshire Hathaway credentials yet?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Did you get your credentials in the mail yet? I haven’t seen any, but talked with a couple this weekend who said they received theirs just a few days ago. And just having the credentials in hand made them so excited that they spent the weekend “pre-shopping” at Borsheims and Nebraska Furniture Mart, picking out what all they’ll buy during the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders weekend.

How fun!

If you don’t have your credentials yet, don’t worry! Here’s the scoop from Berkshire Hathaway headquarters:
  • - The 2010 Annual Reports were mailed to shareholders of record and beneficial-but-not-of-record shareholders in mid-March.
  • - Included in the mailing was a Proxy Statement
  • - A perforated postcard was attached to the Proxy
  • - Fill out and return the postcard to order your meeting credentials
  • - Shareholders are entitled to a maximum of 4 meeting credentials
  • - The credentials are required for the meeting and other weekend events, as well as to receive special shareholder pricing during the discount period.
So make sure you get those postcards in! We want to see you during the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders weekend and during the shopping period. Remember, the discount at Borsheims runs from Monday, April 25, to Saturday, May 7. The discount at Nebraska Furniture Mart runs from Tuesday, April 26, to Monday, May 2.

Happy pre-shopping!

Warren Buffett ready to sell

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

People are starting to mark their calendars for Sunday, May 1st. That’s the day Warren Buffett will be working the counter at Borsheims. Mr. Buffett will be selling jewelry as part of Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders’ weekend, and we at Borsheims are so excited to have the Oracle on the sales floor!

The Associated Press ran a brief piece on Warren Buffett’s jewelry sales this week.

At Borsheims, we’re busy getting everything ready for Mr. Buffett and the crowds that will surely follow. Part of that planning involves preparing for the media crews who will want to document Mr. Buffett’s time on the sales floor. If you’re a member of the media, please email me at tmeuret1@gmail.com so I can ensure you get the access you need to document the day.

And if you can’t wait until May 1st, we do have plenty of sales associates ready to help you now. Visit www.borsheims.com to start shopping!

The Visitor’s Guides are out!

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Or at least the electronic version is ready to go! If you’re coming to this year’s Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders’ meeting, you’ll enjoy checking out this year’s visitor’s guide now.

Assembled by Warren Buffett’s wonderful staff at Berkshire Hathaway headquarters here in Omaha, the guide is a great overview of everything that’s going on during Berkshire Hathaway shareholders’ weekend.

We have the download-friendly pdf right here.

In it, you will find information on hotels, restaurants and activities taking place during the shareholder weekend. The guide also contains the official schedule of events for the weekend, shuttle information and details on shareholder shopping periods.

You can see from the cover of the guide that this year’s theme is Planes, Trains and Automobiles. (Did you know there’s a theme for each year’s Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders’ meeting?) At Borsheims, we try to ensure our decor and memorabilia reflect the theme. The shareholder passes do, too.

We’ll be unveiling our 2011 Berkshire Hathaway memorabilia here soon, but until then, enjoy a little light reading to get you excited for your trip to Omaha!
